73 Super Beetle with a mysterious fuel leak

My 73 Super Beetle with a 1776 engine and dual Kadrons has been sitting for the most part around two years. During that time I have started it up at least twice. The first time I had gas pouring out of the overflow on one bank. Had it towed to my mechanic, he started it and no fuel leak!

Hi John,

I’m sorry, but I did not receive all of your message. I will answer what I can. On the fuel overflowing out of the vent tube, this is most likely caused from a sunken float or a sticking fuel float valve (needle and seat). The Kadron Carburetors are notorious for this! If it was the float valve, towing the car to the mechanic could have knocked it loose and would be the reason when the mechanic tried to find the problem, there wasn’t one found.

With the quality of fuels available at the pumps these days, there isn’t an additive to keep the fuel from going bad. I have seen carburetors come apart and they are covered in a white powder inside that is super hard to clean out. It is said that the fuel we have today can go bad in 30 days. For so many of us that park our toys over the winter, this is a major on going problem! My suggestion is to locate a fuel additive/stabilizer that you add into the gas before parking the car for extended times. This will give you better odds that you will be problem free come a sunny day!

Thanks,

Andy
