What parts do I need to lower and run Wide 5 disc brakes on my 69 Bug?
My question is about lowering my 69 Bug. I want to run 5 wide bolt pattern , disc brakes, adjustable beam and dropped spindles… is this possible and what parts do I need? Thanks
Hi Tim,
Thanks for the question. What you want to do is not a problem! In fact, AC Industries is just getting ready to offer twelve new wide 5 disc brake conversion kits! We do offer rebuilt front ends in over 100 combinations.
I want to go over some possible problem that you might run into. First, it is not recommended to run a completely lowered adjustable beam and lowered spindles. This usually lowers the car too much. This combination will start you about 3″ lower than stock and once adjusted to the lowest point, go to 6″ total! If you car is still all together, go out with a tape measure and measure from the top of your tire and measure up to the bottom of the fender. You will find the the 3″ starting point, in most cars, will put your tire right at the fender lip. With this combination you will not have any way to raise your car. We would recommend you buy a 50/50 beam. This will allow you to lower your car approximately 1 1/2″ and also raise your car 1 1/2″. So, now when you install this beam with lowered spindles, your car can go 1″ lower than stock to about 4″ lower than stock. But best of all you will still have a nice ride!
Second, you want to look at the tire and wheel combination. All the available lowered spindles on the market today will make your wheel track wider by about 1/2″ per side. Switching from your 4 lug drum to our AC Industries wide 5 disc kit will save you about 1/8″ per side. The net result will be about a 3/8″ positive offset. I say all of this to make sure that with this extra offset and the tire and wheel combination you want to install, it is best to make sure that it will all work together and give you the look that you want! It is your hard earned money and you only want to do this once!
Lastly, due to all the different combinations that we offer, I would recommend that you call in to the store and talk to one of our sales staff at (562) 633-4979. This will be the best way to quickly figure out exactly what you need.
Best of luck with your project,
Andy
