I want to give you the best possible answer, but I do not have the year make and model. There are differences on the years in the striker and latch designs.

In my 30+ years of being around these cars, one of the biggest problems I have found is the build up of dirt and grime and the lack of lubrication. I would recommend removing the door latch out of the door and give it a good cleaning with solvent or brake clean. Re-lube the mechanism with a white moly spray lube (WD-40 makes one) and reassemble and make your adjustment. More than not, this fixes the problem.
